The braking system consists of a brake master cylinder, a servo system, an ABS pump and actuators working in the calipers. There are, of course, other elements which we will omit for the sake of brevity. These systems are hydraulic, which means that the braking force is transferred by the fluid in the system.
Fluid is the main cause of all brake failures. The efficiency of this system mainly depends on it. It should be replaced at least every two years or every 40-60 thousand. km. Fluid that is too old loses its working properties in the system. It may lose its compressibility properties. It may be more susceptible because it is hydrophilic, i.e. it tends to combine with water. And even 3% of water in the system can cause corrosion, which in turn can cause pitting in the actuators and pump. Corrosion particles also precipitate from the metal, which can clog the braking system. Its quality can be checked with special testers. You should also take care of the appropriate amount of brake fluid.
There are several causes of a collapsing brake pedal. We will present them together with the symptoms of the failure.
- Braking system clogged with air.
- the brake pedal collapses after pumping it several times — hardens. - Worn brake fluid. It may boil when braking (from high temperature), which may lead to the formation of air jams.
- There is air in the system, symptoms as above. - Leaking actuators and damage to brake lines.
- brake fluid loss. - Damaged brake pump. Pitted or damaged seal in the master cylinder.
- The brake pedal slowly falls to the floor (with the engine off) - Damaged ABS pump.
- There may be several failures and causes here, so we will elaborate a bit.
Some ABS pumps may have leaked, especially at the pressure accumulator. Most often, this is where damage occurs. Symptoms such as those caused by a leaking brake system.
Dirt from a corroded system may clog and jam the pistons in the ABS pump block. The symptoms may be different here.
- One or two wheels (diagonally) can be locked. The car pulls to one side, the wheels get very hot.
- It may be that the wheel (one or two diagonally) does not brake at all. When braking, the car pulls to one side.
- It may be that when you press the brake pedal, the pedal softens / sinks in slightly.
Due to operational reasons, i.e. due to wear of the brake linings, the brake fluid level may also decrease, which may also cause air to enter the system.
As we can see, fluid is a very important element of the safety and reliability of brakes. So let's check its condition and quality. Let's also remember that manufacturers recommend different fluids for their vehicles, they cannot be mixed or used interchangeably.
What does a soft brake pedal mean?
A soft brake pedal is often the result of air in the braking system or brake fluid wear, which can reduce its effectiveness. Regular inspections and replacement of brake fluid are crucial to maintaining proper brake performance. If you find that the brake pedal sinks to the floor, it may indicate more serious damage, such as leaks in the lines or damage to the master cylinder. Such symptoms should not be ignored, as they may lead to a complete loss of braking ability, which is extremely dangerous both for the driver and other road users.
A falling brake pedal may also be the result of damage to the brake pedalpy ABS, which is one of the more complicated problems in the braking system. The ABS pump is responsible for properly distributing the braking force to individual wheels, which prevents them from locking during sudden braking. Damage to this component may lead to unpredictable behavior of the vehicle on the road, especially in difficult weather conditions. Therefore, any suspected AB pump failure should be immediately verified by a specialist.
