The automatic transmission has only advantages at first glance. Comfort of moving around the city, no need to constantly use the clutch pedal or gear lever. Thanks to this, many of us cannot imagine returning to a manual transmission. We are relieved in all this by the computer and the mass of electronics that control the entire system. However, in this article we will focus on its disadvantages, specifically electronic faults.
The gearbox mechatronics is the heart of the entire system. It consists of a hydraulic part, which includes, among others, valves responsible for changing gears, pistons and channels through which oil or fluid flows under high pressure, and all this is controlled by the controller. It reads information from various types of sensors and, based on the read data, smoothly manages the operation of our gearbox. What if one of these elements fails?
A damaged gearbox controller will not always clearly indicate its fault. First of all, you should go to a good mechanic (preferably specializing in gearboxes) for diagnostics. First, read the errors with a diagnostic tester. Depending on the type of fault, the controller may show various types of errors. These may concern valves, gearbox input or output speed sensors. There may also be errors related to CAN communication or related to incorrect hydraulic pressure. It also happens that the controller loses communication completely. This symptom may also indicate a direct fault.
If the errors have been read and the diagnosis indicates damage to the transmission controller, there is no need to panic, because the vast majority of faults can be repaired. This way, you can sometimes save up to several thousand zlotys, because purchasing new or even used mechatronics is quite a significant expense, not to mention the costs related to controller coding, etc. When deciding to send parts for repair, the best option (applies to DSG gearboxes) is to ship the entire mechatronics. This is due to the fact that most errors may concern the controller or hydraulics at the same time. For example, a valve error may be caused by a seized hydraulic valve or a damaged actuator controlling this valve, which is already located in the controller itself. Our technicians are able to precisely locate the fault by installing the entire mechatronics on the test machine and by performing thorough diagnostics on the table, they are able to find and remove the cause of the problem. In the case of CVT gearbox controllers, we recommend sending the controller only. The hydraulic plate almost never fails there, and by sending only the controller we reduce the risk of heavy hydraulics breaking the sensors.
