How to determine the cause of a wheel speed sensor (ABS) error

Wheel speed sensor fault

The wheel speed sensor error is one of the most common faults occurring in ABS systems. It may cause the brake assist system, traction control system or vehicle stabilization system to malfunction. The cause of such an error is not always the sensor itself — also often the problem lies in the controller or the electrical harness. Below we describe step by step how to determine the source of the fault using an ordinary multimeter.

Step by step diagnostics

Wheel speed sensor errors may result from three main reasons: damage to the sensor itself, the ABS controller or a break or short circuit in the harness connecting these elements.

The first stage of diagnostics is to check the voltage supplying the sensor. To do this, unplug the plug of the sensor that reports the error and use a meter to check the voltage (in volts) between the appropriate pins. Then we perform the same measurement on the plug of another sensor – preferably from the second wheel of the same axle — to compare the results. If the voltage values are identical, it can be assumed that the power supply and the signal from the control system are correct, and the problem lies in the sensor itself.

To confirm this, check its resistance. We set the meter to measure resistance (in ohms) and measure the value between the sensor pins. We compare the result with the values of other, functional sensors. If the resistance of the sensor that reports the error is significantly different from the others, it is damaged and needs to be replaced.

However, if the voltages measured on the sensor plugs differ, it means that the sensor is probably working properly and the fault should be looked for in the harness or in the ABS controller. In such a situation, reconnect the sensor and disconnect the plug from the ABS controller. Then we set the meter to measure resistance and check the continuity of the wires by measuring the resistance between the pins of the controller plug corresponding to the sensor being tested. We compare the obtained values with the measurements of other sensors.

If all results are the same, the harness is OK and the fault is in the controller. However, differences in measurements indicate a problem with the cables. most often a break, short circuit or insulation damage.

Summary

Correct diagnosis of the wheel speed sensor error avoids unnecessary replacement of functional components and shortens repair time. In most cases, a simple meter is enough to precisely determine whether the fault is the sensor, the cables or the ABS controller itself. Regular inspection and quick response to system errors will help maintain the full functionality of the braking system and road safety.

If after performing diagnostics it turns out that the problem is on the controller's side, it is not always necessary to buy a new element immediately. The NAPRCZESC.PL company specializes in professional repair and regeneration of ABS controllers of various makes and models of vehicles. Thanks to many years of experience and modern technical resources, we are able to effectively restore the functionality of most damaged controllers.
